14th December 

Following recent guidance we will continue to see patients as normal for their recall and treatment appointments. We will be screening patients with a simple questionnaire which we will send to you by email. We will carry out the same screening on arrival.  Alternative screening methods will be available for those without access to email.

Following the lifting of the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, we politely request that visitors continue to wear facemasks in the practice.

Guidance for healthcare settings suggests that face masks should still be worn to protect vulnerable patients.

Following the government announcement this evening regarding a third national lockdown, we would like to clarify that dental practices are not affected and all appointments are permitted to continue in order to prevent adverse effects to oral health.

Whilst we will endeavour to ensure that all appointments are maintained, we ask for your patience and understanding with regard to the difficulties that we will face with staff shortages as a result of the restrictions - something that has been apparent for many businesses over the past year.

Following the recent announcements from the government regarding further restrictions during the Coronavirus pandemic, we would like to update you on the situation with regard to dental practices. 


To reassure you, dental practices are currently permitted to open regardless of which tier of restrictions the area falls under. Dental appointments are categorised as a medical need and have been considered by the government as a necessity following the implications to oral health that have been encountered since the initial lockdown in March. 


We have implemented a range of safety measures which all staff have received training for. We are equipped with the supplies required to deliver dental care and treatment in a safe environment for all patients.

18th October 

We are currently working our way through the backlog of appointments.  This is taking some time, as patient flow through the practice is much reduced and appointment lengths are longer.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We are now able to offer all services including fillings, crowns and implants. 


Unfortunately, we are unable to take on new patients but we are taking details for later contact when we are able to do so.  

1st September

Firstly, thank you to all of our patients who have supported us throughout the last few weeks.  It has been difficult given the restrictions in place with appointments, treatments and changes in communication.  You have been immensely understanding and patient and we cannot thank you enough.  

We've had a number of enquiries regarding services being offered, and so to summarise, we are currently offering the following appointments:

  • Any emergencies (toothaches, broken fillings, teeth, denture repairs, pain, swelling, trauma) 

  • Routine examinations

  • Scaling

  • Orthodontics

  • Whitening

  • Retainer, bite guard and sport guards

  • Dentures 

  • Extractions

  • Consultations and discussions for all treatment types 

  • Simple fillings which do not produce an aerosol (water spray) 

Treatments we are unable to provide at this time:

  • Fillings generating an aerosol

  • Crowns, certain bridges 

  • Implants 

We will be in a position soon we hope to provide these treatments.  Please bear with us, we will keep you informed.  If in the meantime you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We have had to return many forms as they have not been ​filled in correctly. 


Common errors:

  • all questions require a response. Some sections are missed altogether, some questions are ignored

  • lack of details eg. medications or information relating to a 'serious illness' or allergies (please use the text boxes on the form)

  • please provide a mobile phone number so we can contact you on arrival at the practice - see 'other points' below

Please do not assume we have full details of your medical history in your notes:

  • medical histories may have changed since your last visit

  • covid screening is an essential requirement

  • omissions either in the information given to us previously or that recorded by us can be verified        

To avoid disappointment and frustration, please ensure you complete the form fully. If you need help with any aspect of the form, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Other points

We will follow the protocol as outlined below for inviting you into the practice.  Please remain in your car or outside the practice until the time of your appointment and we will call you on your mobile phone - please have it switched on!  If you do not have a mobile phone, please inform us at the time of booking your appointment for alternative arrangements.     

In recent weeks we have had to cancel all pre-booked examinations. This was to ensure appointments were spaced apart and reinstated to prevent over-crowding in the practice.  We have been making contact with all patients who had been cancelled and with those who would be due an examination or scaling appointment.  We apologise for this inconvenience and if you feel you have been missed please contact the practice.

The practice is now open.   We will be progressing through urgent appointments only to begin with.  Please do not attend the practice in person at this stage. Re-opening the practice !

Update 4th June 

Due to additional procedures, precautions, and social distancing measures, we will initially be running at a reduced capacity for both patient and staff protection.  There is a very significant amount of work to be done in preparation for opening which we hope will be in the week commencing 15th June.


In the first instance, we will only be offering emergency appointments, pre-booked over the phone.  We kindly request that you do not attend the practice unless you have a scheduled appointment

We would ask that you read the following information which will explain what to do/expect when you attend the practice for your appointment:  


1. Please arrive shortly before your appointment time but stay in your car and await a phone call from our reception team to notify when the surgery is ready. 

2. Where possible, only the patient should attend the appointment.


3. Please only bring essential items into the practice with you.  


4. We have placed markings on the floor to indicate safely distanced areas.


5. On entering the practice, please use the hand sanitiser located in the reception area.


6. Following your appointment, please proceed to reception for further direction as necessary. All payments and paperwork will be carried out remotely/online as far as possible.


7. Please DO NOT attend if you or anyone in your household have any of the symptoms of COVID-19.


8. Please use the lavatory at home before you attend for your appointment. Should you need to use the toilet at the practice, please ask at reception.

Many of you have been following updates we've made available on the website and social media regarding COVID-19 and the effects to dentistry and our practice over the last few weeks.      

The regulations are changing on a weekly basis so rather than emailing every week, we would suggest that you please visit our website at https://www.holmeschapeldentist.co.uk/covid for updates and to learn how the changes will affect you as well as the procedures to follow if you attend the practice.

Key points at this time:

1. For any enquiries or emergencies please contact the practice during our normal working hours on 01477 533941 or email info@holmeschapedentist.co.uk. Please do not attend in person without an appointment.


2. In the short term, our priority will be to see patients who require an urgent appointment. These appointments must be pre-booked, as above.


3. Depending on restrictions and the logistics of opening up more surgeries safely, we will then introduce routine examination and scaling appointments. We have details of the patients whose appointments were cancelled during the lockdown and we will begin to work our way through scheduling these appointments when permitted.


4. The majority of treatments (fillings, crowns etc.) will be delayed as the current advice is to avoid this type of procedure whilst the pandemic alert level remains high. Further delays may be inevitable due to the limited access to the additional PPE required for this treatment. We will endeavour to resume booking these appointments in the near future and will be guided by recommendations indicating when it is safe to do so.


5. As July approaches and given many appointments still remain in place, it could be that we have to space them out more in order to adhere to social distancing requirements and a stipulated downtime between treatments. This may lead to further rescheduling, however rest assured we will be working hard to fulfil our commitments to our patients.

Update 30th May

Following the announcement by the government on 28th May, we would like to inform our patients that we will be re-opening the Practice from Monday 8th June 2020.
We have had to cancel numerous appointments since the lockdown began 6 weeks ago and will initially be prioritising appointments for our existing patients who have had dental emergencies.  We politely request that you do not attend the clinic unless you have an appointment. For all routine examinations and hygiene appointments, there is no need to contact us as we will be in touch when we are able to open the diary for routine care.  

At present there is still a significant shortage of appropriate PPE, so treatments may be delayed at this time or referred for address at an Urgent Dental Centre.  The availability of PPE along with social distancing measures will limit the number of patients we are able to see, but this will hopefully change over the coming weeks as further instruction is issued and restrictions are lifted.

Update 18th May

Unfortunately there is no further (concrete) information to offer our patients.  All practices are still required to remain closed temporarily, as per the department of health and the chief dental officer.  

Emergency dental centres are up and running and, we are informed, are working reasonably well to provide very limited services. 

We are reaching that point where as a profession we anticipate returning to work to provide a service, but there isn't much information available to enable us to do so at present.

We have been preparing however, for what will likely be a gradual introduction of appointments.  We've been in to make sure everything still works!  And we're running through some preliminary procedures for seeing a limited number of patients each day.  Our PPE will be somewhat different to what you're used to seeing us in, with different masks, visors, aprons etc. and will no doubt be a source of much amusement (certainly no more than my current hairstyle), but we will hopefully have more information about this soon (PPE and hair). 

Initially we'll need to prioritise those patients who have already contacted us with longstanding issues for the first week or so of re-opening our doors.  We can then address how we are able to facilitate treating ongoing emergencies and concerns, things that aren't as urgent from a pain point of view, but are important to you. 

We're still not sure how many patients we'll be able to see per day - but almost certainly not the same number as before. 

At this time we are unsure how long this will last last for but it will be dictated by the perceived risk to both our patients and our staff. 


It does feel as though we're being kept in the dark by our regulatory bodies and that dentistry has been forgotten about during this period.  Hopefully it will return to the forefront as it is a vital aspect of healthcare.  We're particularly concerned that we haven't been able to monitor and look at any of our patients for the last 8 weeks and in fact by the time we get back that number may be much more - and that's a great concern for us all here.  It's most important that we are granted permission to return to work as soon as is feasible, at least to assess and plan for our patients.


On opening there will no doubt be a “new normal” although what this means exactly remains to be defined. At present we do not know what criteria we must follow in order to provide services, and where the continued risk of CV will be within the population as a whole. 

We do know that there will be some strict operating procedures and we are confident it will be a safe environment to ensure risks are minimised.  Rest assured everything we do will be for your (and our) protection whilst we go through this interim phase.

As always, thank you for your messages of support.  We have been thinking about you all at this time and it has been a worry that we've not been able to care for you in the way we normally have.  These recent weeks have caused us all to reevaluate and for us, will no doubt lead to a new era in the provision of dental services.  Certainly moving forwards we will continue to look after you and if anything, improve our services further to ensure we make things better and easier for you.

Update 1st May

Under the circumstances, telephone triaging for those of you presenting with problems has been working reasonably well though clearly without assessing in person, it does present with some difficulties! For most we are able to provide practical help to see you through to our opening and I thank you all for your patience and understanding.

In the last week dental care centres have been set up locally for urgent treatments only and we have managed to arrange appointments for a few of our patients who have needed pressing treatment in a safe environment. 

We have also been taking a number of general enquiries.  Some are related to treatment options, or improving smiles, and others are for just a chat!  Tip: email photos of anything you would like to discuss (e.g. broken tooth, staining, misaligned teeth) – this can work really well and allows us to offer more detailed advice.

In light of advice from government and our regulatory bodies to further slow the spread of the Coronavirus, we are temporarily unable to see patients at the practice and will now only be able to deal with emergencies by telephone.  Should you find yourself in need of dental advice, please phone us on 07907018983 where your concerns can be triaged, and appropriate advice offered. 

We wish to reassure you that we are regularly checking with Public Health England for updates in the interests of safety and wellbeing for our patients and team, and adjusting our protocols as and when advised.

As dental practices are particularly high risk and as there is a shortage of necessary protective equipment, the government is setting up centres where urgent treatment can be completed safely in an appropriate environment using the most protective measures.

Our team will be contacting you to reschedule any booked appointments which fall within the lockdown period up until the time that we are permitted to reopen and continue treatments.  We will be extending our hours to ensure all patients receive their allocation of treatment and to fulfil our obligation to you.
